Ultra-Slim Above-Counter Basins
An ultra-slim above-counter basin sits on top of the vanity like a shallow bowl, its thin walls giving a light, contemporary look that has become a signature of modern bathrooms. The slim profile keeps the basin from feeling bulky while still offering a generous, practical washing area.
Why choose an above-counter basin
Because the basin rests on the benchtop rather than dropping into it, an above-counter design showcases the bowl as a feature and lets you make the most of a beautiful stone or timber vanity top. The ultra-slim versions, with walls just a few millimetres thick, look especially refined and modern. They also keep the full depth of the drawer or cabinet below usable, since the bowl doesn’t intrude into the joinery.
Getting the height and tapware right
The trade-off with a raised basin is overall height: measure from the finished floor to the vanity top and add the basin height to check the rim lands at a comfortable level — around 800–850mm to the rim suits most people. Standard hob mixers can sit too low against a tall bowl, so pair an above-counter basin with a taller vessel mixer or a wall-mounted mixer so the spout clears the rim with room to wash beneath it.
Material and care
Slim basins are commonly made from fine fireclay or vitreous china, and some use thin-cast solid surface for an even crisper edge. A glazed surface wipes clean easily; just avoid abrasive cleaners that can dull the finish, and check that the waste is the correct type, as above-counter basins often use a pop-up without an overflow.
