Fireclay Sinks
A fireclay sink brings a timeless, farmhouse-inspired look with a hard, glossy finish that shrugs off daily use. Fired at high temperature for a dense, non-porous surface, it's a popular choice for a butler-style kitchen or laundry that needs to look good and work hard.
What fireclay is
Fireclay is a ceramic clay moulded into a single thick-walled bowl and kiln-fired with a glaze at very high temperatures. The result is a smooth, glassy surface that’s resistant to scratching, staining and heat, and easy to wipe clean. The classic form is the apron-front (butler) sink, where the front face is exposed as a design feature, though undermount and drop-in fireclay bowls are also common.
Choosing and fitting one
Fireclay sinks are heavy, so the cabinet beneath needs to be built to carry the weight — a purpose-made sink base or reinforced supports. Decide on the mounting: an apron front sits into a modified cabinet; an undermount fixes below a stone top. Measure the bowl against your base unit and confirm the tap will be wall-mounted or bench-mounted, since apron sinks rarely have a tap ledge. Check the waste position lines up with your plumbing.
Living with it
The glazed surface is genuinely low-maintenance — a wipe with mild detergent keeps it bright, and it won’t absorb odours or stains. Very hard knocks from heavy pots can chip the glaze at the edges, so a protective grid in the base is worth having. In white it stays classic; darker glazes hide marks between cleans.
