In-Wall Cistern Toilet Suites
An in-wall (concealed) cistern hides the tank inside the wall, leaving only the pan and a slim flush plate on show. It's the cleanest-looking way to fit a toilet, frees up floor space, and makes the room far easier to wipe down.
How it works
The cistern sits in a steel frame built into a stud wall or a purpose-built bulkhead, with only the flush plate visible. The pan is either wall-hung — mounted on the frame so it floats clear of the floor — or wall-faced, sitting on the floor against the wall. Because there’s no exposed tank, the whole suite looks minimal and there are fewer surfaces to clean around.
Why choose one
Wall-hung suites make a small bathroom feel bigger and let you mop straight under the pan. You can also set the pan height to suit the household during install, which is a real comfort advantage. The trade-off is that an in-wall cistern needs to be planned into the wall, so it’s a renovation job rather than a quick swap — but the result is a cleaner, more spacious look.
Planning and access
The frame must be fixed to solid framing and the wall built out to suit, so agree the position with your plumber early. Modern concealed cisterns are serviceable through the flush-plate opening, so maintenance access is straightforward. Choose a dual-flush cistern with a good water rating, and pick a flush plate finish that matches your tapware.
