Freestanding Baths: What to Know Before You Buy

A freestanding bath is the centrepiece of a bathroom — a sculptural tub that stands on its own rather than being built into a surround. A 1700mm bath is a popular full-length size that gives an adult room to stretch out while still fitting most family bathrooms.

Styles and materials

Freestanding baths come in back-to-wall, double-ended and slipper shapes, in acrylic, stone-composite and steel. Acrylic is light, warm to the touch and holds heat well, which is why it’s the most common choice; solid stone composites feel substantial and luxurious but are heavy and cost more. Think about how the shape reads in the room — a soft oval feels classic, while a squared design suits a minimal scheme.

Space, weight and plumbing

Leave clear space around the tub so it reads as freestanding — ideally room to clean and move around all sides. Check the filled weight against your floor, especially upstairs, as stone baths can be very heavy once full. Decide early how it’s filled: a floor-mounted freestanding spout, a wall spout or a bath-side mixer each need their plumbing roughed in to the right spot before tiling.

Comfort and everyday use

Internal length and backrest angle matter more than the outside size — sit in one if you can. Consider the depth for a proper soak and whether an overflow position suits your height. A freestanding bath is a long-term feature, so choose comfort and a shape you’ll still like in ten years.
