Glass Vessel Basins
A glass vessel basin brings a light, jewel-like quality to a bathroom. Sitting on top of the vanity, it catches the light and adds a decorative touch that ceramic can't quite match — a good option when you want the basin to be a talking point.
The look and feel
Glass basins come clear, frosted, tinted or textured, so you can go subtle or bold. Because they sit above the bench like any vessel basin, the shape is on full display — round bowls feel soft, while angular designs read more contemporary. Tempered glass is surprisingly tough, but it’s still a more delicate choice than ceramic, so it suits main and guest bathrooms more than a busy family one.
Care and durability
Look for toughened (tempered) glass, which resists knocks and thermal shock far better than ordinary glass. Clean it with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner to avoid scratches and keep it clear; limescale shows more on glass, so a quick wipe after use keeps it sparkling. Avoid pouring boiling water straight into a cold bowl.
Pairing and installation
As an above-counter basin, a glass bowl needs a tall vessel mixer or a wall spout so the tap clears the rim. Set it on a solid, level vanity top and seal the base neatly. A simple benchtop lets the glass be the feature; a busy surface competes with it.
Where to see them
In the Illawarra, you can browse a range of vanities and basins at Just Bathrooms, a local showroom, to see how different basin materials look in a setting.
