1800mm Freestanding Double Vanity Buyer's Guide
An 1800mm double vanity gives two people their own basin and bench space, which is why it's the go-to unit for a busy family or shared main bathroom. Floor-standing versions in a soft light-grey finish sit comfortably in most modern rooms without feeling heavy. This guide covers what to weigh up before you commit to a unit this wide.
Is 1800mm the right width for you
At 1800mm a twin-basin layout works properly — each person gets a bowl with a run of bench between them, rather than two basins crammed edge to edge. Before you plan for one, measure the wall run and allow clearance for the door swing and any towel rails. If the room is under about two metres of clear wall, a single wide basin on the same cabinet often works better than forcing in two.
Floor-standing construction and finish
Floor-standing units rest on a kickboard that conceals the plumbing and the floor junction, so small level differences in an older floor are easier to hide than with a wall-hung unit. A light-grey MDF cabinet with a moisture-resistant coating is a practical middle ground: warmer than stark white, but still neutral enough to sit under almost any tile or tapware. Check that the carcass edges are properly sealed, since that’s where board vanities tend to fail first in a humid room.
Basins, top and tapware
With two basins you’ll need two sets of tapware and two waste connections, so factor that into the plumbing rough-in early. A single continuous benchtop across both bowls looks tidier than two separate tops and gives you somewhere to set things down. Buy the cabinet, top and basins as a matched set where you can, so the cut-outs and overhang line up as intended.
