Wide Black Above-Counter Basins: Proportion and Placement

A larger black above-counter basin makes a bold statement, but its size means placement needs thought. Getting the position right ensures the tap can reach the bowl and there's enough clearance to use it without splashing over the bench.

Getting the proportion right

A wide black bowl anchors a bench visually, so it needs a vanity big enough to carry it — on too small a top it crowds the edges and leaves nowhere for daily items. Aim to keep flat bench either side so the basin looks placed rather than jammed in. On a long or shared top, decide whether to centre one wide bowl or push it toward one end, and let the cabinet width guide the balance.

Tap reach and splash clearance

The bigger the bowl, the further the tap has to throw water to land in the centre, so check the spout reach against the basin’s width before buying. A tall basin mixer or wall spout that clears the rim and reaches the middle keeps water in the bowl; a short or shallow spout will splash onto the bench. Allow clearance behind the bowl for the tap and in front so the rim doesn’t overhang the bench edge.

Height, waste and finish

Because it sits on the bench, the basin lifts the working height, so pair it with a shorter vanity so the rim lands comfortably. Most above-counter bowls have no overflow, so fit an unslotted pop-up waste and avoid leaving the tap running with the plug in. Black pairs easily with black or brushed tapware; a quick wipe keeps water marks off the surface.
