Inset (Drop-In) Basins

An inset basin — sometimes called a drop-in — sits down into a cut-out in the benchtop so its rim rests flush on the surface. It's a classic, practical choice that works with almost any vanity and keeps the bench easy to wipe down.

The appeal of an inset basin

Inset basins are forgiving. The rim hides the join between basin and benchtop, so they don’t demand the millimetre-perfect cut an under-mount basin does, and they’re straightforward to replace later. They also sit lower than an above-counter design, which many people find more comfortable for everyday use.

Getting the cut-out right

The one thing to get exactly right is the cut-out. Every inset basin comes with a template; the benchtop is cut to that shape and the basin dropped in and sealed with silicone. Make sure the benchtop is deep enough front-to-back to take the bowl with room for the tap behind it, and that the cabinet below clears the underside of the basin and the trap.

Tapware and finishes

Because the rim sits on the bench, you can mount the tap either on the basin’s tap ledge or on the benchtop behind it — decide which before the top is cut. Gloss white ceramic is the standard, but inset basins also come in matte finishes and softer colours if you want something less expected.
