Undermount Basins
An undermount basin is fixed beneath the benchtop, so the top edge of the bowl sits below the surface with no rim on show. The result is a clean, seamless look and a bench you can wipe straight into the basin — one reason undermounts are a favourite in considered, modern bathrooms.
The seamless look
Because there’s no rim covering the join, an undermount basin gives the vanity a sleek, built-in appearance and makes the benchtop the hero. It also makes cleaning easy — crumbs and water sweep straight over the edge instead of catching on a raised lip. The catch is that the join is on show underneath, so it needs a neat, well-sealed installation.
Benchtop requirements
Undermounts suit solid benchtops — stone, engineered stone or solid timber — that can be machined and sealed at the cut edge. They’re generally not recommended for laminate, where the exposed particleboard core can swell if water gets in. The benchtop fabricator cuts the opening and fixes the basin from below with clips and adhesive, so coordinate the basin and benchtop together.
Tapware and everyday care
With no tap ledge on the basin, tapware mounts on the benchtop behind the bowl or on the wall — decide which before the top is cut and drilled. Keep the sealed join clean and dry to protect it long-term, and choose a glazed bowl that resists staining.
