Semi-Recessed Basins

A semi-recessed basin is a clever middle ground: the back half sits into the vanity while the front projects beyond it. That gives you a generous bowl on a shallow cabinet — ideal where a full-depth vanity would block the walkway.

When a semi-recessed basin makes sense

They shine in narrow bathrooms and ensuites where every centimetre of floor counts. Because the cabinet behind can be much shallower than the basin itself, you keep storage without the vanity intruding into the room. The projecting front also brings the bowl closer, which some people find more comfortable to use.

Matching basin and cabinet

The basin and vanity have to be designed to work together — the cut-out in the benchtop and the front profile of the cabinet must match the basin’s shape. Buy them as a pair, or confirm the basin’s template fits your chosen vanity before ordering. Check the projection so the finished bowl doesn’t stick out into a doorway or walkway.

Everyday practicality

A deeper bowl reduces splashing, which matters when the basin sits forward of the bench. Pair it with a mixer or wall spout positioned to land water near the centre of the bowl. As with any ceramic basin, a glazed interior keeps it easy to clean and stain-resistant.
